An Argentinean succeeds an Englishman as the head of the Dominican
Order
Delegates
from 102 countries, who are gathered in Providence (RI) for the
General Chapter of the Dominican Order, a Catholic religious Order,
have elected their 86th Master since the foundation of the Order
in 1215 by saint Dominic de Guzman.
Very
Rev. Carlos Azpiroz, OP, from Buenos Aires (Argentina), was elected
Saturday, July 14th, by 127 delegates representing over 6, 000 brothers
in the Dominican Order worldwide. He succeeds to Fr. Timothy Radcliffe,
OP, a native of London, who was the first English Master of the
Order. Fr. Carlos Azpiroz is only the second non-European Master
General to serve in the Order's 787 years of existence.
The
new Master General is 44 years old and is a specialist in Canon
Law. He will serve the Order for a nine year term.
The
delegates of this international Order, to which famous saints, such
as Thomas Aquinas, Albert the Great and Catherine of Siena belonged
to, will continue to reflect on their current mission in the world
and its future, through August 8th , at Providence College (RI),
the only college or university operated in the United-States under
the auspices of the Dominican Friars.
To
ask for an interview with the new Master of the Dominicans or get
more information, call (401) 865 2380 day or evening. Additional
information and photos are available on the Dominican's Chapter
website at : http://www.providence2001.org/
